in my absence from class this past week, certain factions have emerged and a battel fought last Friday, of which i only became aware today. it would appear that there are, on one side: Those Who Don't and Think They Know (loudly and with awful pronunciation, emotional and illogical justifications for glaring grammatical mistakes). on the other: Those Who Sort of Do and Think They Know (but largely derivatively, and with much more humility).
it must be said that the former group is populated by those who have spent as much as one year in the former Jugoslavia, in which (apparently) great amounts of effort were expended in failing to learn any scrap of speech beyond pivo ("beer").
it must also be said that the latter is composed of those in possession of another Slavic language and, moreover, a healthy respect for and faith in the relative universality of grammar.
if i'm not exactly straddling the line here, it's not as though i'm actively joining up; only That Language matters, and if my impervious unawareness to anything else happens to offend, it will only be those attuned to something else altogether.
