waiting for the miracle

maybe hrvatski is a different language than srpski.

i had a lot of time in which to puzzle over this crucial matter while sitting in the Glavni Kolodvor waiting for the train from Zurich, via Ljubljana, by which i was to head back to Beograd. though it became clear fairly early on that said train would be late, no one could (either authoritatively or speculatively) say exactly how late. thus, i left the station only briefly (but at regular intervals, given the coming-up-for-air made necessary in the smoky enclosure)—fearing that the moment i did so, for real, the train would arrive. in this way, three hours were wasted and, moreover, i never arrived at a definite conclusion to the above.

around the midpoint of the finally-underway journey, i hauled out the computer in order to write some crap and found it unwilling to turn on, the battery light unresponsive. "dismay" would be putting it lightly. during the next several hours, i outlined, in depth and at length, the specific reasons why a failure now, as i prepare to leave the country in a week and a half, would fall at, perhaps, the single worst time ever (the usual "sandy-head of the immediate dilemma" reaction, i suppose—but i didn't much care). although i have most things multiply backed up, not being able to access—much less work on—things like financial reports and end-of-term documents could be severely debilitating. not to mention not being able to make final arrangements for The Great Unknown....

got back and hiked up from the station a hurry to meet Marko, as we'd planned—but made more urgent, given the presumed computer emergency. it turned out, however, that the battery had done one of the gymnastic plummets, ninety-eight to zero in one point four seconds flat, for which both it and the prodigy (by which i mean Errant Youth) ipod are gaining world renown. opted for plugged rehabilitation instead of punishment; in two weeks the tactics might be different, but for now i need cooperation and am prepared to secure it by any means necessary—including even the dispensation of sugary treats.
